What is Entrepreneurship and Social Entrepreneurship?

Advertisements

Everywhere you go, you see products of entrepreneurship. For example, the food market on your block and the shoe company Nike are products of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurs are people who start their own business. Examples of entrepreneurs are Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, and Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook. Entrepreneurs like Jobs and Zuckerberg are innovators and forever changed the face of technology, but not every entrepreneur makes such revolutionary change. Someone who bakes cookies or crochets hats and sells them online is an entrepreneur. In simplest terms, an entrepreneur is a person who creates his or her own business.

Underneath the umbrella of entrepreneurship, is the concept of social entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurs create businesses that have a social mission. Social entrepreneurs are people who are passionate about fixing a problem whether it is a small issue in their town or a worldwide problem. An example of social entrepreneurship is Warby Parker. Warby Parker uses the proceeds from the sales of eyeglasses to provide a pair of eyeglasses to someone in need. (There will be more posts about Warby Parker).
